An ephemeral lake, a trip east, a hard landing…

Winds from the south brought the water back

so we visited it…

before the weekend, which went to an acceleration of tasks and packing so as

to leave a day early,

[Aggie at her last parfumerie]

Monday.  After a final review of the Vast Estate

it was 447 as usual to the much-hyped “Loneliest Road” with its near-constant westbound traffic

[not shown], thankfully unpopulated heading east except when it wasn’t.

Whenever it wasn’t the highway usually adhered to the Inevitable Law of the Two Lane, producing some slug just as one reached a twisty canyon or similar zone of no passing.

Fortunately, after Ely’s construction traffic, toylike train and gas station chaos,

Utah was wide open until forty miles west of Delta when we came up on three cops cruising,

slowing us from 95 to an excruciating 70, and then, finally through town, leaving us stuck with around twenty annoying rush hour vehicles.  Once they were dispensed with it was on

to Salina and I-70 where If Emery Mussentuchit who can?  Mormon humor…

In Green River, eleven or so hours out of Wall Spring, a frighteningly angry group of pink doublewide creatures wrapped in garish beach towels were awaiting takeout at the Tamarisk

as we slipped in to dinner by the river and sleep soon after.  Tuesday’s wet morning highway

proved mysteriously dry on the Trail through Time adjacent, dry as well in Fruita where at

Camilla’s Kaffe we innocently ordered eggs with rellenos without a clue as to what constitutes a

Western Slope “Relleno”.  Whoa!  The remainder of the morning was spent pushing through

the Gunnison against the constant rising tide of recreationalists and

down the swollen Arkansas [after shopping Salida’s spaced-out Safeway]

to reach quieter Gardner, then ten miles up a dirt road to unload, unpack and have a lengthy

Libre evening which left some of us near-comatose all through third of July.

Thin air, blue skies, warmer than the desert…
