but not the scene
whether inside, up the creek,
or on the steps we sheltered in place until Tuesday
when, after crossing the valley, evidence of A Mysterious Affluence was sighted along the road to Cuchara and then in La Veta Jytte broke the news I would need some outside intervention
to restore my right arm’s mobility, not the greatest but useful information, followed,
down the street, by a most excellent lunch at Adrienne and Mary’s wherein I was delighted to finally bond with their most discriminating creature, Kramer, through singing. That accomplished we were nearly home when, poking along behind some cautious punter in a Jeep of recent origin, we discovered Joan weeding outside the Mountain Water gate and stopped.
Half an hour later the Jeepish person was blocking the road at Jim’s – perhaps he’d heard Luz’ “Atlas Obscura” podcast*, found us on google maps and came on up – but pulled aside,
facilitating our return to the Dangerous Dogs** to begin a last run of uninterrupted days
until Pueblo next week, a cold wet run if Wednesday was any indication though Thursday, albeit
chill, was nonetheless bright. The next day, however, contained multitudes; on Fossil Hill Linda got word that Jim had cut himself while chainsawing but was, miraculously, ok, this determined after a flurry of phone calls as well as, walking back, a lengthy visit catching up with Bill and Mu.
In the afternoon Leon came by to talk at length about Drama in the Lounge…I was upstairs but heard it all again when the bad bicycle-chasing dogs and I ran into him on our afternoon walk.
All this was followed by a fun dinner at Mary Ann’s with Robert and Joan which allowed a most welcome opportunity to see everyone. We left in a cloud, more intense than the “Brume” depicted in Roberto’s link above, and Saturday, cloud in recession, L. made a final trip to the
Farmer’s Market while the dogs and I visited Libre’s Library, Sumi subsequently discovering
a Glorious Bullsnake attempting her best rattlesnake impression right there in our driveway,
scary but ultimately fooling no one. Upstairs, time running out,
and down for hamburgers sans buns on a most autumnal evening; two weeks hence we’ll either be closing up to leave or in Page, Arizona, so won’t see another full moon*** slanting across the floorboards here for many moons to come…sadness of wishing to be in all these places all
the time at once…forever, maybe [whatever that is].
*“Atlas Obscura; definitely worth a listen.
**”Dangerous” in that left alone to their own devices they tend to explode tooth and claw most exuberantly once released. We’re waiting for their puppydom to calm down but the Border Collie in them may well delay that as much as six years…and counting. Three to go.
***Not shown.
Did I get it that the right arm’s mobility is going to be helped by Kramer (who’s that) and singing??
No…Kramer is Adrienne and Mary’s “creature” [a dog]. Jytte, our Physical Therapist in La Veta, recommended outside intervention in the form of PT when we are back in California…singing, like the exercises I’ve been doing all summer, probably won’t help.
Sorry to hear about the additional work needed on the arm. These photos show that love you have for this spot, really beautiful. Yes, it is a pity we can only be in one place at a time.
