for days; everything, all at once, continuing, after the Faiveley, with the Benicia Car Show which
is seemingly earlier every year, first time in three and with many more People of Color participating. Not only the lowriders [V-town definitely in the house for this one!]
but some admirably understated classics like this perfect ’56 Ford…
not to mention a plethora of immaculately realized noir finishes
and other stuff. A perfect day for it with
Chelu Bombs* well represented [like I said, V-town]
as well as the occasional exquisite understatements,
classical expressions
and surprises.
I wandered home
thinking to have the afternoon free to prepare for Monday’s photos but oh no…we had to
go to Vallejo instead; Kaiser ER and Farmacia with L., all to the eventual good,
THEN a rushed end of day sorting and readying thirty random undocumenteds for Monday which were duly shot, rewrapped and racked [not shown] as the next day was all about
shopping, packing and somewhat loading since Wednesday, along with more of all that,
also included CCA’s final event on the historic Oakland campus with many exhibits
of which I only saw “Dennis Leon and the Art of Instruction”**, several old friends outside
the Oliver [everybody’d gotten old all at once!] and orphan ceramics on the lawn.
We left before dark,
making it back to Benicia in time for a last Pad Thai, a last Poirot***…and bed.
*For awhile I had a very swell mechanic from that club who took care of the ’45 and my former Tundra until health and landlord problems put him out of business…that’s America fer ya.
**A moving and memorably inspirational show on several levels; WHY it was only up for the last few days of the last few days of the Oakland campus was mysterious. But there is an excellent and informative catalog, which is available by contacting joan.leon1@gmail.com. Worth the effort…
***M. Poirot is becoming increasingly deranged and increasingly Catholic in these later episodes…
Now I know how to time my eventual visit to the “Bay Area” to see family and friends: the Benicia car show !
Outstanding cars, exquisite paint jobs; nice that L’s noir finishes fit right in. You guys really know how to “cram life” with last-minute documenting, shopping, packing, Kaiser ER, Rx, loading, and final CCA art show….acting more like 18 instead of 8-oh!
Hopefully you can chill on the road east, enjoying the less-crammed “out there”.
PS: What’s with the chopped ‘57 Chevy on its phantom trailer? Digitally distorted double exposure? Cool.
All too much…and it continued. The ’57 Nomad was an inadvertently liquified double exposure, supposed to be the “featured” email image, too…didn’t show up for us though…
As for acting like 18, well the feelings are definitely eight -uh-oh, I’ll tell ya.
Hahahaha you have a year on me, but I am starting to feel my age as well….sigh. I am constantly caught trying to do too much. When we lived in Capitola, they had a great car show there, similar to Benicia’s. Here in Monterey, there is a lot of car love, but mostly for costly antiques. Homeless camping out next to the giant tent wherein they are auctioning $40,000+ automobiles. I loved the colors of course, especially the lemon yellow Buick and the noir to noir shift from cars to sculpture and back. The CSA show looked really interesting, dynamic and not the usual — too bad it was a limited showing.
Happy travels!
Great car show, Mike, I’d love to see it next year.
nice yearly event but I like to see them most with their hoods down
