Wednesday morning; the calm before the [alleged] Storm of the Century with only
scraps of snow from Monday’s and dry highways over Donner,
[Fun Fact: one of the Donner Survivors opened a restaurant once he reached Sacramento!]
Sierra Valley…
and east.
Sand Pass,
Wall awaiting [keep the truck?] but
barely below freezing the first night and wind,
though plenty of it, through the morning
which eventually became just wet enough to splatter.
Sometime during Thursday’s full-mooned night a little snow snuck in
from the west as trees attested.
Same thing Friday night; a little less, a little wetter, but better
than none.
The Peachleafs, always winter winners, then
again, come afternoon, mere mud.
Aggie and I made it to the chairs but didn’t linger as the day was winding down, as had the SOTC, which had done its…whatever.
Lots of snow downrange and elsewhere [the roof of the City Hall was rumored to have caved in in Rossland, BC] as well as copious rains reported in the lowlands beyond the mountains but
for us Sunday was a mere dusting soon done and really
more like a frost.
All along Inventory continued into the Radar Years with
breaks
for infrequent trains
Monday drier yet
making for a happy burnday
and the last of the RR Paintings documented.
A saga. Maybe I’ll put up a random selection, subsequently.
1990 construction, 1991-1995…studio at Radar,
then here…now here.
The Jupiter, one of the two trees on this land when we came, prevails
as do, Destination on a last afternoon, the chairs…

Wow…..Wall with fresh snow and sun…..sweet!
Sorry I wasn’t there! But I did have a day of skiing/boarding on one of those days…. sweet.
The difference; I was “out there” with a large group of people, you were “further out there” with dogs only.
Great photos of Wall and I’ve always loved the Radar series.
And you doubtless had considerably more snow, no?
Opened a restaurant in Sac? I had no idea. Nice shots, it does look cold. BTW, what are the roads below Radar? A mine?
Those roads below Radar were [are] the Auburn Mine, infrequently active during our tenure. More from Radar at the end of the month, hopefully…
I thought may that winding road was the way up to your place. Glad to hear it is not.
hmm the restaurant causes one to ponder…what meat was served? Lovely shots!
We hope it wasn’t what they refer to in the New Guinea highlands as “long pig”, eh?
The restaurant’s Donner Pass Special Breakfast with 3 fried eggs, 3 pancakes, bacon and sausage with coffee or tea seemed to him a real bargain at 55 cents, but somehow no one ever ordered it and he eventually took it off the menu. He renamed the place Donna’s Diner (it had been the Donner Diner) and business picked up considerably.
Finally getting a chance to look at these….Wow! There are som many beautiful images, including some of the RR paintings. Love the way the yellow grass can be seen poking through the snow as well as other colors in unexpected places.
